Today, Saturday, December 10, 2022, coincides with the 74th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948, is considered one of the most important documents that occupy an important place in international legal texts, especially since it is the first recognition of human rights.
The vote was in the year 1948 in the presence of 58 countries, as 48 countries voted for it and two countries were absent, while 8 countries abstained, and no country objected.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights consists of 30 articles and speaks of the opinion of the United Nations on the human rights protected by all people. The Commission on Human Rights was composed of 18 members representing various political, cultural and religious backgrounds.
Eleanor Roosevelt, the widow of US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, chaired the drafting committee of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, with Rene Cassin of France, who drafted the initial draft of the declaration, the committee’s rapporteur Charles Malik from Lebanon, the committee’s vice-chair Pong Chung Chang from China, and John Humphrey from Canada and Director of the United Nations Division for Human Rights, who prepared the outline of the declaration.
The committee met for the first time in 1947, and the most prominent rights were the right to work, non-discrimination in wages, the right to rest, leisure time, and a standard of living that achieves well-being and good health.
