European interior ministers agreed on plans to strengthen cooperation to tackle illegal immigration and prosecute those involved in human trafficking.
The agreement came after a meeting of British Home Secretary Soella Braverman and her European counterparts from France, Germany, Belgium and Ireland, devoted to the “harraga” file, after a large increase in illegal immigrants to Europe and the discovery of new outlets through which these people crossed.
The security approach to the phenomenon is based on strengthening the cooperation of the Joint Intelligence Unit located in Calais to enable the operational teams to better identify and respond to criminal networks, as Britain joined the Frontex agreement to monitor borders and coordinate with the European police, Europol, to combat illegal immigration and detect Smugglers and prosecute them. France and Britain suffer from a high rate of illegal immigrants through the Channel, which reached 10,000 people in 18 months. The plan includes increasing the number of French police patrols by 40 percent of the officers to curb the “harragas” coming through this channel, after French cooperation prevented the infiltration of 31 thousand “burners” during the current year.
In addition to the European plan, the French Immigration and Asylum Law, which will enter into force in the next three years, is based on accelerating the expulsion of harragas and even foreign residents in the event of their involvement in criminal acts.
