“Amnesty” accuses the warehouse and the Spanish authorities of killing 37 African immigrants in the “Nador massacre”

Today, Tuesday, Amnesty International accused the Moroccan and Spanish authorities of contributing to the killing of at least 37 African migrants who tried to enter the Spanish enclave of Melilla at the end of last June, and have since covered up the truth of this tragedy.

Amnesty said in a report that “the methods used by the Moroccan and Spanish authorities contributed to the killing of at least 37 people,” based on many testimonies it collected from migrants who were present on June 24 at the border between Morocco and Melilla and its analysis of video clips and satellite images. .

“Amnesty” stated that “some of the actions of the Spanish and Moroccan forces, such as beatings against people whose movement was restricted, deprivation of emergency medical care for the injured, and the frequent use of tear gas against people in closed places from which they cannot escape, constitute a violation of the right not to be subjected to torture and other types of ill-treatment.” “.

The Secretary-General of Amnesty International, Agnès Callamard, confirmed, according to what was stated in the same statement, that “after six months, the Spanish and Moroccan authorities continue to deny any responsibility for the Melilla massacre, while evidence of multiple gross violations of human rights is mounting,” considering that “this situation It smacks of cover-up and racism.”

Nearly 2,000 sub-Saharan African migrants tried to enter Melilla from Nador (northern Morocco) on June 24th. The tragedy of these people on what is known as “Black Friday” sparked international outrage, as the United Nations condemned the “excessive use of force by the Moroccan and Spanish authorities.”

Along with Amnesty International, independent experts appointed by the UN Human Rights Council have confirmed the death toll to be at least 37, and deplored the lack of specific responsibilities in both Morocco and Spain.

UN experts confirmed that the tragic images of African migrants who were killed at the Spanish-Moroccan border when trying to cross into the Melilla enclave last June revealed the deep racial biases that characterize many contemporary border control policies and practices.

Many photos and videos circulated on social media showed that the Moroccan security forces used excessive force against migrants, and the videos also documented the bodies of migrants stacked on top of each other.

A journalist’s investigation conducted by a Moroccan website confirmed that the killing of African immigrants at the hands of the Makhzen forces of repression was “a well-studied matter and Morocco’s imprint on it is clear.” He also confirmed that the Makhzen regime seeks to bury the bodies of the dead without an autopsy to “blur the truth.”
