Non-hydrocarbon exports are expected to reach $7 billion by the end of 2022, which is a record high thanks to the strategy of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which aims to diversify the national economy and continue controlling imports, at a confident pace.
Similar to the year 2021, which witnessed an increase in the value of non-hydrocarbon exports by nearly 5 billion dollars, the year 2022 allowed a greater push for these exports to reach 7 billion dollars, which is a goal drawn by the President of the Republic to ensure the sustainability of the growth and diversification of the national economy.
And President Tebboune had noticed, last September, that “the process of liberalizing and diversifying the national economy was just a slogan during the past thirty-forty years,” recalling in this regard that non-hydrocarbon exports did not exceed, at that time, a ceiling of $1.3 billion.
Thanks to the exceptional achievements that the year 2022 witnessed in the field of non-hydrocarbon exports, as well as the increase in hydrocarbon exports, the trade balance is expected to record a surplus of $17.7 billion at the end of the past year, an increase of $16.6 billion compared to 2021.
This qualitative leap recorded by the trade balance, which previously suffered a deficit, would not have been possible without the trade policy adopted by the state to promote non-hydrocarbon exports, without neglecting the role of high fuel prices in international markets and its positive impact in this field.
The government’s general policy statement affirmed that “the mechanisms that enhance the resilience of the national economy to deal with external shocks constitute the core of the government’s work.” Based on this trend, commodity exports are expected to reach $56.5 billion by the end of 2022, of which $49.5 billion are hydrocarbon exports.
Control and reduce imports
On the other hand, it continued during 2022, with quick and confident steps, the policy of regulating and reducing imports with the aim of protecting national production and limiting the consumption of exchange reserves, which allowed maintaining a balance in commodity imports, which is expected to reach $38.7 billion by the end of 2022.
These results were achieved thanks to taking several measures, represented in particular in drawing up national production maps, where approximately 419 thousand national products were counted, approximately 13,600 importers and approximately 5,500 exporters.
In addition, the import activity was reorganized for the immediate resale process, through the specialization of importers according to the divisions of homogeneous activities. Thus, the number of importers moved from approximately 43,000 importers to less than 13,600 importers in 2022, which represents a decline of 68 percent.
