Sharhabeel stresses the need to update the legal and legislative framework related to the statistical system – the Algerian Dialogue

The Minister of Digitization and Statistics, Hussein Sharhabeel, stressed today, Thursday in Algiers, the need to update the legal and legislative framework related to the statistical system, considering that this is a “first priority”.

In a speech he delivered during the opening of the second meeting of the National Council for Statistics, Sharhabeel explained that “at a time when Algeria celebrates the sixtieth anniversary of the restoration of national sovereignty, and the National Bureau of Statistics the fortieth anniversary of its founding, the legal and legislative framework related to the statistical system remains the first priority.”

In this context, the Minister pointed out that the legal text related to the statistical system dates back to 1994, and has not witnessed any amendment since that date, while “the statistical function across the world and in Algeria witnessed a qualitative leap in terms of importance in setting public policies and the unprecedented spread of statistical information through Through international governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as the intersection of the world of statistics with the world of digital technologies, from which new specializations and professions related to big data and open data emerged.

Here, Sharhabeel called for stimulating the joint use of information systems and databases, and accelerating the interoperability of platforms.

He also urged “the need to encourage tight coordination between all components of the national statistical system, especially the various ministerial sectors, in order to ensure that efforts are not dispersed, avoid making the same investments in various sectors, and enhance confidence in official statistics by avoiding large differences in the indicators between public institutions and administrations.” .

In this regard, he stressed the importance of the National Statistics Council’s contribution to the modernization and reorganization of the national statistical system through a “coordinating and consultative” approach.

In press statements on the sidelines of the opening of the second meeting of the National Council for Statistics, the minister affirmed that the preliminary results of the sixth general census of housing and housing will be presented within next January, that is, three months after the start of the implementation of the national census process, pointing to the importance of this “structural” process that affects all national territory.”

On the other hand, he pointed out that his ministerial department is working on implementing a project aimed at setting a unified ground for coordinating the methodology of statistical work between the various ministries as well as the National Bureau of Statistics, in addition to conducting sensitization and training courses in this context.
