Arkab: Achieving a fair and smooth energy transition by providing clean and safe sources of energy – Al-Hiwar Al-Jazaeryia

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, participated today, Saturday, in Algiers, in the activities of the twenty-seventh edition of Energy Day, under the slogan “Climate Change, Energy Sobriety and Green Hydrogen”, in the presence of the Minister of Environment and Renewable Energies, the Minister of Industry, and the Minister of Public Works, Irrigation and Basic Facilities Minister of Knowledge Economy and Emerging and Small Enterprises, Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts. The meeting was also attended by the CEO of the Sonelgaz complex, the head of the hydrocarbons control authority, as well as executives from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, experts in the field of energy, renewable energies and energy transition, and engineering students from the National Polytechnic School in Algiers.

During a speech delivered on the occasion, the Minister of Energy and Mines stressed that this edition has become a tradition and a prominent event in the context of promoting exchanges between the higher education sector and various actors in various fields, as it is an opportunity to enhance dialogue and discussion on topical issues and the challenges facing us in order to achieve a fair and smooth energy transition by providing Clean and safe sources of energy to ensure the achievement of its goals aimed at protecting the environment and climate within the framework of sustainable development.

The minister also indicated that Algeria seeks to adapt to the international context and respond at the same time to the growing demand for energy while contributing to the country’s social and economic development, as these endeavors are based on a voluntary policy aimed at protecting the environment by relying on clean energy technologies.

Algeria is also making great efforts to reduce different types of emissions. In the field of gas flaring, Sonatrach has joined the global initiative “Zero Routine Flaring by 2030”, and is also working with the Algerian Space Agency in cooperation with the World Bank in scientific and technological research in order to measure and monitor methane gas emissions in order to permanently reduce these emissions. Regarding the introduction of renewable energies, the minister indicated that Sonelgaz has supplied twenty villages with solar energy in the Great South, and established, within the framework of the national program for renewable energies, 22 photovoltaic stations with a total capacity of 344 megawatts, in addition to launching hybridization projects with a 50-megawatt program. Sonelgaz is also working on the completion of the entire program, i.e. 15,000 megawatts across more than 40 states. On the other hand, Sonelgaz will carry out pilot projects to establish 1,000 charging points for electric vehicles.

The minister concluded by stressing that the sector is working to enhance energy efficiency and sobriety through the inclusion of energy efficiency measures in the sectors of construction, transport and industry, as well as the development of hydrogen in a way that suits the capabilities and capabilities of the country, which will allow Algeria to be a major regional player in this field.
