The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, in a report he sent to the Security Council on Tuesday, April 4, praised the personal commitment of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to the promotion of peace and stability in the Republic of Mali.
In this context, Antonio Guterres praised the direct involvement of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in the efforts aimed at activating the path of implementing the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali, which emanates from the Algeria path.
In particular, he mentioned that the President of the Republic received successively, last January and February, delegations representing all the financial parties that signed the Algiers Agreement, represented by the government and the political-military movements.
In light of these developments, the Secretary-General of the United Nations praised Algeria’s leadership, which plays a dual role as a leader of international mediation and chair of the agreement’s follow-up committee, highlighting its initiatives to overcome the current impasse in the implementation of the agreement, which remains, according to him, the best tool to promote sustainable peace and reconciliation in Mali.
For reference, the Secretary-General’s report comes in anticipation of the Security Council meeting on the situation in Mali, which is scheduled to be held under the chairmanship of Russia on April 12.
On this occasion, in addition to developments related to the political transition in the country and the ongoing restructuring of the MINUSMA mission, the attention of the fifteen Council members will likely focus on the current difficulties facing the implementation of the Algiers Agreement.
This situation constitutes a source of deep concern for the international community, which encourages the Malian parties to adhere to the spirit and dynamism of the Algiers Agreement, the main objective of which remains to provide conditions for peace, security and prosperity in Mali.
