President Tebboune: Algeria will enter BRICS as an observing member, and our indicators are better than Europe – Al-Hiwar Algeria

The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, presented a number of clarifications regarding Algeria’s efforts to join the “BRICS” organization, as he confirmed that it will soon enter as an observing member until it finishes its economic reforms and becomes a member with full rights and duties.

President Tebboune said in an interview with “Al-Jazeera Podcast” that Algeria is taking important economic steps and “BRICS” will make it more powerful, stressing that power today is for the economy and not for politics and defense – military power – and Algeria has “green” indicators confirming that it is on the right path despite some attempts Parties distort these indicators. In the context, President Tebboune spoke in the language of numbers, as Algeria ranks fourth in the strongest economies in Africa, and it does not have a “penny” of external debt, as the Algerian economy began to restore its balance from 2020 and gradually rise during recent years, while some were predicting a collapse that would push it to seek refuge. to the International Monetary Fund to “be forced to remain silent”. For the first time in 40 years, the Algerian economy achieved non-hydrocarbon exports worth $7 billion. Algeria also achieved an internal growth of 4 percent, raised workers’ wages, and created a grant to help the unemployed at a time when European economies suffer from inflation and high unemployment rates. The exchange reserve amounted to 64 billion dollars. The President also referred to the inflation rate in Algeria, which reached 9 percent, compared to European countries, where this rate rose to 11 percent. In the context, President Tebboune stressed that economic work is being done in order to achieve positive indicators achieved in Europe, because the Algerian does not look at his surroundings, but rather at the lifestyle in Europe.

The President considered that there are indications of political acceptance of Algeria’s accession to the “BRICS”, as Russia, China, Brazil and South Africa have expressed their approval, while India has not yet responded, indicating that Algeria is closer “politically” to non-alignment. The president revealed the meeting of the BRICS organization next summer, and “Algeria will enter as an observing member in the first stage until we fix the situation and become a member with full rights and duties.”

Restricting imports is not to deprive the Algerians, but to support the national product

President Tebboune spoke about the decision to restrict imports by emphasizing that it was not issued to deprive Algerians, but to support the national product, which now meets 95 percent of the needs of Algerians, as Algeria currently exports various products and materials such as iron, cement, foodstuffs, etc., but “exporting without achieving the welfare of the people does not means something,” according to the president. In the context, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune revealed that Algeria achieved in 2022 a production of 34.5 billion dollars of vegetables and fruits, and the agricultural sector became involved with 17 percent of the national income after it used to import onions and garlic, while the ambition is currently focused on reaching 10 percent of industry revenues in 2024 and 2025. He described this challenge as “strong, and we will reach it,” while stressing that Algeria currently imports only a few services, thanks to young people and emerging institutions, contrary to what was the case previously.

The president said that the economic indicators are green despite attempts to “blacken” them by some, and even the numbers of international organizations and bodies confirm this, similar to the United Nations, including Algeria exceeding the international average in electricity coverage, which reached the maximum limits, and the supply of natural gas to families, which reached 72 percent and reached the mountains scuffs and auras.

The President of the Republic indicated that Algeria is better than Europe in terms of prices, and he said, “We are better than Europe in terms of prices. There is no country that supports prices like Algeria. We are a social country par excellence, and this is the decision of the martyrs.”

President Tebboune: We are currently working for 70 million Algerians

The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, explained the economic strategy that Algeria is currently working on in order to prepare the conditions for a rise in demographic growth to the limits of 70 million people.

President Tebboune said in an interview with the “Al-Jazeera Podcast” that investment is currently mostly from the private sector, which accounts for 85 percent of the Algerian capital, while 1,300 investors are waiting to obtain licenses to launch the activity, including the creation of no less than 55,000 job positions. The president added. The Algerian Economic Renewal Council targets $30 billion by 2027.

The President spoke about Algeria’s projects to achieve true African integration that benefits the peoples, such as the fiber optic project – Niger-Nigeria – and the Nigeria-Europe gas pipeline through Niger and Algeria, whose studies are about to be completed, and exploration in Niger for the benefit of Niger, funded by Algeria, and the railway project to enter Bamako. And linking African countries with each other in a way that benefits the people and not economic blocs.
