After the announcement of the new immigration law, which caused a sensation in France, French President Emmanuel Macron called for the acceleration of the return of Algerian harragas and other nationalities to their countries of origin, as well as the organization of foreign workers working in sectors where employment is difficult.
The new immigration bill came to control the number of arrivals to France and regulate the status of illegal residents, in addition to doubling deportations from French territory, which is causing widespread controversy in the country, and could further restrict the Algerian harragas there.
This project has raised concerns from the authorities and bodies concerned with asylum issues, as it aims to reduce the rights of foreigners on French soil. In addition to the condition of knowing the language and adhering to the principles of the Republic, the law will seek to increase the number of deportations from the country and expel those who are classified as a “danger to public order.”
In order to respond to the shortage of labor in some sectors, the new law proposes granting those who worked in those sectors on French soil for eight consecutive months residence for three years, provided that it does not include the right to reunite with their families.
More controversially, the law would allow for one-year work permits to be granted to illegal immigrants working in sectors where employment is difficult.
France’s immigration law targets Algerian harragas
French President Emmanuel Macron has announced his intention to tighten French laws in this aspect, so that illegal immigrants can be quickly returned to their country of origin.
France is moving towards establishing a new law related to immigration, as the French Parliament began considering its provisions last March after the government approved it on February 1, 2023, in order to regularize the status of illegal residents for three years or more. And workers in sectors that suffer from a shortage of manpower.
It is also expected that the new immigration law will speed up the examination of asylum seekers’ files, while intensifying the expulsion and deportation of foreigners who are in an illegal situation on French soil.
It is noteworthy that French law prohibits the employment of workers without a residence permit, which was confirmed by lawyer Kevin Monsion, who specializes in labor law in France. As for the required professions, if the employer finds only a worker without residence, he can take the necessary procedures to employ him in an official manner for a limited period until other qualified workers are found.
