After more than 12 years of absence, following the state of chaos that erupted in the past decade, Syria is participating in the Arab summit held in the Saudi city of Jeddah, after the decision of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, during its extraordinary session, to resume the participation of Syrian government delegations in meetings. The League Council and all its affiliated organizations and agencies, which represents an important step towards restoring one of the most important founding members of “House of Arabs” in the forties of the last century.
Perhaps the decision to return Syria to resume its activities in the Arab League carries great importance on parallel tracks, the most prominent of which is restoring the state of Arab unity after years of fragmentation and division, of which the position on Damascus was one of the most prominent reasons, by achieving the greatest degree of consensus on the one hand, while contributing to the establishment of the “Sunnah” New in dealing with the crises befalling the region, through the “Arabization” of solutions, on the other hand, given that the step represents an important starting point for resolving the Syrian crisis, which has been going on for more than a decade.
In this context, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said in a statement following the decision to return Syria to the arms of the “House of Arabs”, that it is the beginning of a movement and not the end, noting that the matter does not mean that the crisis has been resolved, but rather the contribution of the Arab countries. with the solution.
While the Syrian response was quick to return by participating in the Jeddah Summit, where Foreign Minister Faisal Al-Miqdad arrived in Saudi Arabia yesterday, Monday, at the head of a high-level delegation to participate in the preparatory meetings for the summit, which is scheduled to start next Friday, expressing his happiness with what has been achieved. He also confirmed President Bashar al-Assad’s official participation in the Arab Summit.
Damascus’ participation in the activities of the summit comes after many stations that witnessed major differences, perhaps the most important of which revolved around the international and regional entanglement in the Syrian crisis, due to the presence of many conflicting powers, such as the United States, Russia, Iran and Turkey, but there are great efforts made by the regional powers. And on top of it is Algeria, which chaired the work of the 31st Arab Summit, which issued an initiative to return Syria to the bosom of the League of Arab States.
In this regard, Foreign Minister Ahmed Ataf stressed during the inaugural session of the Council of the League of Arab States that Algeria “welcomes the signs of consolidating the approach whose features began to emerge with the resumption of the sisterly Syrian Republic to occupy its seat in the Arab League and the steps that have been taken to develop and strengthen relations and contribute collectively to resolving the crisis in Syria ” .
The foreign ministers of the Arab countries began flocking to the summit to attend the ministerial meeting between them, before the meeting of the leaders scheduled for next Friday.
