Kakhovka Dam Destroyed, Villages Flooded, Ukraine Begins to Evacuate Residents – El Hewar Algeria

A Ukrainian official said on Tuesday that several villages were “totally” submerged in floods following explosions that destroyed a section of the Kakhovka Dam in the Russian-captured Ukrainian region of Kherson.

“There are about 16,000 people in the critical area on the right bank of the Kherson region,” said Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of the military administration in Kherson, noting that they were exposed to floods in eight regions along the Dnipro River.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also published a video of the dam after part of it was destroyed, showing water flowing from the reservoir through the destroyed part.

For its part, the Russian news agency Tass said that the Nova Kakhovka dam, located in the Russian-controlled parts of the Kherson region in southern Ukraine, was destroyed and that water flooded the surrounding area.

It quoted the Moscow-appointed mayor of Nova Kakhovka as saying that the upper part of the dam was destroyed as a result of bombing.

In an exchange of accusations, the Southern Command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said, on Tuesday, that Russian forces blew up the Nova Kakhovka Dam.

The command added on its Facebook page, “The extent of the destruction, the speed and quantities of water, and the areas that are likely to be flooded are being determined.”

And the governor of the Kherson region in Ukraine announced, on Tuesday, the start of evacuations of areas near the Kakhovka region in the south of the country.

He also announced that at 03:45 GMT “within five hours the water level will reach a critical level”.

It is noteworthy that the explosion that targeted the Kakhovka Dam caused floods, and raised concerns about the Zaporizhya Nuclear Power Plant, which is located near the dam and uses its water to cool it, in the Kherson region, part of which is occupied by Russian forces.
