Starting next July, the Technological Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Oran will organize a training on aquaponics, a system that combines aquaculture and hydroponics.
According to what was reported by the Algerian News Agency on the words of Souad Mowafak, Director of the aforementioned institute, this training course is the second of its kind after the one organized months ago, highlighting that it falls within the customized training program organized in coordination with the local Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Regarding those interested in this type of training, the same official indicated that the institute has registered requests from project holders in this field, farmers and amateurs, adding that aquaponics is characterized by the fact that it can be accomplished in small areas such as a patio or roof of a house.
This training includes two parts, theoretical and practical, in which the trainees learn how and the stages of implementing the aquaponic system. Muwafak highlighted that several trainees would like to complete mini-projects in their homes, thanks to which they can obtain fish and some vegetables such as lettuce and tomatoes.
Aquaponic is an agricultural system that relies on feeding plants (lettuce, tomatoes, herbs…) from fish waste, which bacteria convert into nutrients. Plants also filter and purify water thanks to the bacteria in their roots, which rid the water of those wastes.
