A digitized geographic information system for more than 15,000 archaeological sites in Algeria soon – Al-Hiwar Al-Jazairia

Director of the Legal Protection of Heritage at the Ministry of Culture, Ammar Nawara, revealed that work is underway to complete a digitized geographic information system for more than 15,000 archaeological sites owned by Algeria and put it at the disposal of researchers, stressing that Algeria has great experience in the field of classifying tangible and intangible heritage at UNESCO, which qualifies it to form a number African experts as well as its important role in the recovery of looted cultural heritage.
Ammar Nawara said on the national radio that the culture sector is making sure to train 80 members of the various security forces in the field of protecting cultural property, starting from the 7th of May until the 17th of the same month.
Ammar Nouara explained that for the first time the Algerian constitution protects cultural heritage within Article 73 of it, referring to the installation of a committee to update Law 04-98, which is the law related to the protection of cultural heritage.
The spokesman added that Algeria owns more than 15,000 archaeological sites, saying, “There is a geographical information system that the Ministry of Culture is watching over its embodiment in the field of digitizing the cultural heritage, which will be at the disposal of researchers.”
In a related context, the first guest confirmed that Algeria ranks first in the field of intangible heritage classification, saying, “We have 10 items included in the UNESCO list.”

Ammar Nouara indicated that Algeria has received from 44 African countries experts in the field of classification at the global level, highlighting that our country today is watching over the formation of these African experts in the field of world heritage classification.
As Ammar Nouara pointed out, the Great African Museum, which Algeria will host, will serve as a scientific and heritage beacon to introduce African heritage, stressing that Algeria has a very big role in recovering the looted African heritage.
He continued his speech, saying, “One of the tasks of this museum is that it will raise the slogan of recovering the looted African heritage during the long colonial periods.
In the field of classifying cultural property, both at the local, national and international levels, Ammar Nawara said that there are many archaeological sites that have been classified, stressing that Constantinople and the Algerian dress of the East are very close to classification.
