Algeria calls on the United Nations to fulfill its obligations towards the Sahrawi people

Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva and international organizations in Switzerland, Lazhar Soualem, called on Friday on the international community, led by the United Nations, to respect and implement its obligations and shoulder its responsibilities towards the Sahrawi people, by guaranteeing their inalienable, negotiable or imprescriptible rights to self-determination.

Ambassador Lazhar Soualem, in a speech before the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, reiterated Algeria’s emphasis on the importance of the resolutions previously issued by the UN Security Council as well as the International Court of Justice and many other jurisprudences and advisory visions, with regard to the territory of Western Sahara occupied by Morocco. All of which considered that “the conflict is an issue of decolonization that cannot find its way to a solution except by activating the principle of self-determination.”

In this regard, the Algerian diplomat called on countries, the UN Human Rights Council, mechanisms and the High Commissioner to “respect and implement their international obligations and assume their responsibilities towards the people of Western Sahara under occupation, by guaranteeing their inalienable, negotiable or statutory rights to self-determination and their irrevocable political future.” He could remain forever hostage to the intransigence of the Moroccan occupying state, which has repeatedly failed to implement its international obligations towards the last colony in Africa.

Mr. Soualem also called on the Council and its special procedures, committees and contractual bodies of the United Nations, to “monitor and document the human rights and violations that the Sahrawi people are subjected to in the occupied territories, including arbitrary arrests, extrajudicial executions, blockades and prevention of freedom of assembly and movement, and plundering of their natural resources, especially after a state violation Moroccan occupation of the cease-fire agreement.

In this context, the Algerian delegate to the United Nations in Geneva called on the Office of the High Commissioner to reactivate the technical missions of the Western Sahara region.
