Algeria renews its candidacy for non-permanent membership in the Security Council for the period 2024-2025

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ahmed Ataf, delivered a speech on the occasion of the celebration of Africa Day 2023, which falls on May 25 of each year.

The minister said: We meet today on the 60th anniversary of the birth of the Organization of African Unity, to renew the covenant with its founding fathers to preserve their precious legacy and its rich ideals, firm pledges and firm commitments to achieve the goals of complete liberation, sustainable security and common prosperity throughout Africa.

We meet today to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this precious anniversary, 60 years during which our unitary and civilized project witnessed remarkable progress thanks to the efforts of successive generations of loyal pioneers who believed that there is no dream for Africa except that it is the result of its imagination. and that there is no destiny for Africa except from its management; and that there is no project for Africa except from its planning and implementation; And that there is no straight path for Africa to follow except that which is paved and worshiped by the arms of its daughters and sons.

We meet today in a pause for reflection, assessment and introspection, in which we look at the past, not out of the logic of heartbreak or regret for what we missed or missed, but rather to resent the experiences of the past and resort to its lessons, lessons and teachings to follow in order to achieve a comprehensive African leap through which our continent rises to the highest ranks It is worthy of it in the Nations Forum as a prominent citizen of international decision-making.

Every term has a book.. And in the book of the Saharawi people is an indomitable will, an undefeated right, and an undeniable dream

Today, as we celebrate our common achievements in the areas of spreading peace and security and promoting economic integration in the context of activating the African continental free trade area, which is the subject of the current session of the African Union, we should not forget that our sisters and brothers in the last African colony, in Western Sahara in particular, are waiting for our support and support for the exercise of their inalienable or imprescriptible right to self-determination. Then and only then, Africa can once and for all turn the last page of the history of abhorrent colonialism, disgraceful occupation and shameful plundering of its wealth.

The Sahrawi people, yearning for liberation and emancipation, like other African peoples who preceded them in achieving their freedom and independence, are calling for help from us, and we have no right to ignore their plea. and dominance over him, and we have no right to lag behind in seeking his help from us.

Every deadline has a book, and in the book of the Saharawi people is an indomitable will, an undefeated right, and an undeniable dream.

Nor should we overlook the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Sudan as a result of the crisis that has been raging in this brotherly country for more than a month, a crisis that has claimed the lives of hundreds of innocent people and displaced hundreds of thousands of defenseless civilians, in addition to the signs of an imminent humanitarian catastrophe, and what is looming. On the dark horizon of the danger of another division of Sudan, God forbid. In light of this bleak scene, Algeria calls for redoubling efforts and coordinating endeavors between all international and regional actors in order to extricate brotherly Sudan from the spiral of violence, division and fighting that has afflicted it and afflicted it with the evil of calamity.

Algeria renews its commitment and adherence to the principles and objectives of the African Union in facing challenges

Algeria, which is proud of its deep-rooted African affiliation and adheres to the unitary continental approach, today joins its voice to the voices of its brothers from the countries of the continent, to renew its commitment and adherence to the principles and objectives of the African Union in facing the multidimensional challenges and forms that continue to threaten the security and stability of our countries and peoples and undermine our endeavors aimed at achieving sustainable development and legitimate prosperity.

And just as it contributed yesterday, with all loyalty and sincerity, to the march of liberation and decolonization throughout our continent, and just as it recorded its distinguished presence across all stations of joint African action, Algeria confirms today, under the leadership of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, that it will remain an active party and an integral part of The collective African effort aimed at winning the stakes of economic development and achieving the ambitious vision that we drew together within the African Union’s agenda, known as Agenda 2063.

This vision, which Algeria has fully adopted, has been placed at the heart of the new orientation that the President of the Republic has added to the African dimension of Algerian foreign policy, an orientation based on a firm conviction of the necessity and inevitability of activating the close interdependent relationship between development and security in order to rid our continent of the scourge of armed conflicts and enable it to confront Various transnational challenges.

This is what my country is currently striving to embody through development projects that have been approved for the benefit of many brotherly African countries, the implementation of which is supervised by the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development, after the President of the Republic strengthened its budget with a financial cover of one billion US dollars.

My country is also working to embody this trend by mobilizing resources and mobilizing energies to complete the completion of structured projects of a regional and continental integrative nature, such as the trans-Saharan road project, the Lagos-Algeria gas pipeline, the trans-Saharan fiber optic network, as well as the road project linking the two cities of Tindouf. Algerian and Mauritanian Zouerat.

In this context, I would like to stress that Algeria’s intention to enhance its contributions in the field of economic development in order to achieve common prosperity comes as a continuation and support for the efforts that my country has been making to resolve armed conflicts in order to establish security and stability in its immediate neighborhood and throughout the African continent.

From this standpoint, and as it continues its efforts at the head of international mediation to advance the path of peace and reconciliation in the sisterly Republic of Mali, my country salutes the adherence of the Malian parties to the Algiers Agreement and their serious involvement in the endeavors that Algeria initiated recently to overcome the current difficulties and ensure the speedy resumption of the political endeavor aimed at completing the implementation of The agreement serves the unity, security and stability of this brotherly country.

In the face of security challenges in the Sahel and Sahara region, I would like to recall the initiative put forward by Algeria with the aim of activating and revitalizing the role of the Joint Operational Staff Committee (CEMOC) in combating the phenomena of terrorism and organized international crime, which, with its geographical extent, increasing intensity and ramifications of its components, has become the main threat to security stability and development of the region in particular and the continent in general.

Algeria renews its candidacy for non-permanent membership in the Security Council for the period 2024-2025

Africa Day comes upon us, this year, in an international circumstance burdened with challenges as a result of the increasing tensions in the world and the signs that these developments bring with them in terms of reshaping the balance of power on the international arena, and the rapid and accelerating fluctuations within the existing system of international relations.

These exceptional situations, despite their repercussions, give us a valuable opportunity to contribute to reforming the structural weaknesses of the existing international system, with special efforts focused on the inevitability of addressing the unfair marginalization to which our continent has been exposed for nearly eight decades. .

We have no way to achieve such a goal, except to close our ranks and unify our word so that we can employ the weight of our continent and make its voice heard in various international forums, and devote the aspirations of our countries in dealing and interacting with other countries on the basis of equal sovereignty, equal security, balance of interests and equitable interdependence.

Algeria is a country of peace and peace; a country thirsting for freedom; a country that strives for equality; a country yearning for justice and fairness; These are the principles, these are the ideals, and these are the values that my country wants to contribute to making them torches that illuminate the path of a system of international relations in which collective security has meaning, international cooperation resonates, and authentic interdependence has meaning and impact.

Inspired by these principles, ideals and values, and enlightened by its track record of fulfilling its obligations in spreading and promoting peace, security, development and integration and in defending the issues and priorities of our continent in various fields, Algeria is preparing to participate in its candidacy for non-permanent membership in the Security Council for the period 2024-2025, in the elections to be held on the sixth (06) next June in the General Assembly of the United Nations.

And as the President of the Republic has previously emphasized, Algeria’s candidacy for this important position falls within the framework of the embodiment of its commitment to contribute as an influential actor in facing international challenges, by putting forward ideas and initiatives that would enhance the role of multilateral action in maintaining international peace and security, as well as In reviving international cooperation and providing it with ways to respond to the needs and aspirations of all mankind.

And when we are talking about the Security Council, we cannot help but recall the long-standing historical injustice against our continent, which remains alone to this day in the category of permanent seats and the least represented in the category of non-permanent seats in the same council. In order to rectify as much as possible what results from the gross lack of African representation within the Security Council, Algeria pledges to continue to contribute to unifying the word Africa and describing it within this body to ensure a stronger proposition, more effective defense and more effective protection of our continent’s interests, aspirations and legitimate aspirations.

In the context of our endeavor to achieve this goal, and as we renew our deep gratitude to each of the African Union, the League of Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation for their endorsement and recommendation of Algeria’s candidacy, we look forward to the support of all brotherly and friendly countries to carry out this continental covenant with all the loyalty, commitment, dedication and sincerity it requires. Our motto is “together to uphold the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter for a better future for all.”
