Today, Monday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ahmed Ataf, received a phone call from his Belgian counterpart, Haja Habib, during which the two parties exchanged views on the priorities of Algeria’s upcoming mandate in the Security Council, according to a ministry statement.
On this occasion, the Belgian minister congratulated Algeria on its election as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the period 2024-2025, and exchanged views with Minister Attaf on the priorities of Algeria’s future mandate in the UN apparatus, the statement adds.
On the other hand, the two parties reviewed – according to the same source – the development of relations between the two countries in the political and economic aspects, and touched on the partnership relations between Algeria and the European Union.
They also exchanged views “on many issues of common concern, especially developments in the Sahel and Sahara region in light of the political and security challenges facing the countries and peoples of this region,” the statement said.
It is noteworthy that Algeria was elected last Tuesday in New York by the United Nations General Assembly to non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council, during the period 2024-2025.
Algeria will begin its term on January 1, 2024, until December 31, 2025. This is the fourth time in its history that Algeria has won a non-permanent seat in the Security Council, after the mandates of 1968-1969, 1988-1989, and 2004-2005.
