Before the Rugby World Cup and with the approach of the 2024 Olympic Games, the French Ministry of the Interior, in coordination with the Ministry of Housing, wants to expel thousands of homeless people and immigrants living in random camps in the French capital and its outskirts.
The system mainly concerns immigrants living on the streets, in camps or in emergency shelters and their numbers are considered large in Paris and its suburbs, while the office of Housing Minister Olivier Klein made it clear that it does not specifically target them under the “principle of unconditional reception”.
On Wednesday, Minister Klein defended these “limited-term housing” by saying that they allow “a better reception of the homeless before escorting them towards permanent housing and sustainable social integration.”
Those called to leave are supposed to be cared for for three weeks in “transition rooms” outside the Parisian region.
It seems that the government’s proposal did not impress the provinces, which are supposed to receive immigrants and homeless people in reception centers. “We do not support the establishment of these transitional rooms in our town under conditions that we consider inhumane,” said Mayor of Bruges Philip Salmon, a town of 18,000 people near Rennes.
Breton City Council also criticized the choice of a plot of land adjacent to the railway line and “contaminated with fuel residues, hydrocarbons and heavy metals”, stressing that the occupants of the reception center would not come “of their own free will”.
It is noteworthy that the French government has adopted the same system with asylum seekers since 2021. According to a parliamentary report published on Tuesday, this system has proven “useful and effective,” but a quarter of the people concerned refused to leave the Parisian region.
On the other hand, a government report called for better coordination of transfers with municipalities and protection for local elected officials.
For reference, the French capital, Paris, will host the Olympic Games, which are scheduled to take place in Paris from June 26 to August 11, 2024. This is the third time that Paris has hosted the Summer Olympic Games, as it had hosted the Paris 1900 and Paris 1924 sessions.
