Today, the German Football Association announced the resignation of Oliver Bierhoff, the German Football Association’s sports director, after the German national team was eliminated from the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 in the first round.
Bierhoff and the German Federation reached an agreement “to terminate the contract, which was scheduled to run until 2024.”
Bierhoff – one of Germany’s most famous former players – said in his resignation letter on Monday evening: “For this reason I will not leave without the necessary self-criticism; Over the past four years, we have not been able to build on previous successes and give fans a reason to cheer once again.
The former sports director thanked the people who supported him, expressing his regret that the performance of the German national team in the finals of Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, which “failed to live up to the level of previous successes.”
Bierhoff added: “Some of the decisions we were convinced of were not right, no one is more sorry than me, I take responsibility,” and continued, “I am paving the way for a new direction.”
Hans-Joachim Watzke, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the German Football League, thanked Bierhoff for his years of service in the federation. While the President of the German Federation, Bernd Neuendorf, said that Bierhoff “provided great services.”
