During the year 2022, Algeria witnessed intense activity within the framework of bilateral and regional economic cooperation, which allowed the conclusion of many strategic agreements and the launch of structural projects, in addition to setting ambitious goals that enhance the country’s position at the international level.

This period was marked by the organization of many visits by official delegations and businessmen, as well as activities, bilateral meetings and regional seminars in order to strengthen ties between Algeria and its partners at the international level, which led to the signing of many bilateral agreements, memorandums of understanding, agreements and economic contracts.

In this regard, the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, during the past year, carried out very intense diplomatic work in order to enhance bilateral cooperation with many brotherly and friendly countries, especially in the framework of his official visits to Tunisia, Egypt, Qatar, Kuwait, Turkey and Italy.

President Tebboune also received in Algiers several presidential and ministerial delegations during 2022, which highlighted the position that Algeria enjoys on the international scene and its pivotal role in contributing to security and stability in the region, the Mediterranean basin, Africa and beyond.

These visits also culminated in the conclusion of agreements and agreements that included various areas of cooperation that would allow for the expansion of economic cooperation between Algeria and various countries.

Among these signed agreements are those related to the opening of airlines, especially with Ethiopia and Venezuela, and gas agreements with Italy, Turkey, Slovenia and the Czech Republic, in addition to other partnership agreements signed with France, Egypt, Cuba and African countries in many economic fields such as industry, agriculture, renewable energies, medicine and public works.

Strong comeback on the international stage

On the Arab level, Algeria organized the 31st Summit of the League of Arab States on November 1-2, 2022. This event marked the return of Algerian diplomacy on the regional and international arena, as it constituted an appropriate opportunity to revive joint Arab action and economic cooperation.

During this summit, Algeria renewed its willingness to develop joint Arab cooperation in the economic and social fields with the aim of deepening relations between the countries of the region, calling for lifting all obstacles to trade exchange within the framework of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area.

On the African level, Algeria has also doubled its initiatives in the year 2022, by focusing on strengthening relations with Africa through the actual implementation of the African Free Trade Area and the development of infrastructure projects between African countries, such as the trans-Saharan road, the Algerian-Nigerian gas pipeline, and the fiber optic project.

These structural projects witnessed a great development in the year 2022, through the completion of concrete works that would embody these projects on the ground.

Regarding the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project that transports Nigerian gas to Europe, passing through Niger and then Algeria, which President Tebboune described as a “great African work”, a memorandum of understanding was signed last July in Algiers during the third tripartite ministerial meeting between Algeria, Niger and Nigeria.

On the other hand, bilateral cooperation was strengthened through the signing, in mid-October, in Algiers, of a framework agreement between the Ministry of Industry and the Italian “Fiat” group for the automotive industry, which is a branch of the “Stellantis” group, to establish a project for the manufacture of tourist and light utility vehicles in the wilaya Oran (western Algeria).

This agreement enshrined the distinguished relations between Algeria and Italy and the strong economic ties between the two countries that go back several decades.

In view of this dynamism known to economic cooperation at the international level, Algeria aspires to join the BRICS family in the year 2023.

During the government meeting with the governors held at the end of September, President Tebboune stressed that the national economy has begun to recover, and this recovery deserved recognition by international bodies that “do not know courtesy”, such as the World Bank, of the progress that Algeria has made in this field, especially with regard to raising The value of the Algerian dinar, and making the project of Algeria joining the “BRICS” group a viable goal.
