The specialized “energy” platform published a detailed article on the support of three European countries for plans to transport hydrogen from Algeria to Europe through pipelines.
The specialized platform was based on the latest data, which indicates that the ministries of energy in Austria, Germany and Italy signed a joint political support letter for the development of a hydrogen corridor to Europe and its infrastructure projects, which may constitute an extension of plans to transport hydrogen from Algeria to Europe, with the existence of a memorandum of understanding with Italy to develop Pipeline for transportation of clean fuel.
And the Italian gas infrastructure companies “Snam”, the Austrian “Trans Austria Gaslighting” and “Gas Connect Austria”, and the German Bayerents welcomed the political support for the project. The hydrogen corridor to Europe – also called the “South H2 corridor” – It is a dedicated and ready hydrogen pipeline of 3 thousand and 300 km, led by 4 major operators of the European Distribution System, which are “Snam”, “TAG”, “GCA” and “Bayrents”.
The corridor – which is expected to be fully operational by 2030 – is part of the backbone of hydrogen transmission lines in Europe, and its development ensures the security of energy supply on the continent, according to data seen by the specialized energy platform.
The main initiative for the hydrogen corridor to Europe centers around the use of existing repurposed intermediate infrastructure to transport clean fuels, with the incorporation of some new dedicated infrastructure where necessary. While access to clean hydrogen production sites (wind and solar power) in North Africa will enable competitive production, ultimately benefiting the end consumer.
The corridor has enjoyed the endorsement of institutions, as well as strong support from companies across the entire value chain, along the entire route from Italy through Austria to Germany. The corridor is set to connect North Africa, Italy, Austria and Germany, allowing the supply of green hydrogen produced in the southern Mediterranean region To reach consumers in Europe. With a hydrogen import capacity of more than 4 million tons annually from North Africa, the corridor could reach 40% of the target set by the EU strategy.Europe aims to produce 10 million tons and import the same amount from abroad, showing North African countries – especially Algeria – are among the promising markets for the old continent.
The clean hydrogen is to be produced largely in North Africa, where the partners have signed memorandums of understanding with producers who intend to produce 2.5 million tons per year of hydrogen. Gas, as the most efficient, competitive and sustainable mode of transportation.
Algeria plans to acquire a share of the hydrogen export market in the coming years, especially to European markets, by drawing on the great potential it possesses in the field of renewable energy and infrastructure. In the context, the hydrogen and gas industries expert at the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC), Engineer Wael Hamid Abdel Moati, said in previous tweets via his Twitter account: “The Sardinia (Galci) pipeline is an important project, aimed at supplying Algerian gas to Sardinia, Italy, with a capacity of 8 billion cubic meters annually, equivalent to 80% of the capacity of the Medgaz line linking Algeria and Spain, in addition to its strategic location, as it is considered one of the shortest paths to Europe.
He pointed out that the original design of the Galsi pipeline is to transport natural gas, but if it is converted to work with clean hydrogen, it can transport the equivalent of 2.5 million tons of hydrogen annually, which makes it one of the largest hydrogen export projects through pipelines to Europe.
Wael Abdel Moaty added: “In my estimation, if the Galassi hydrogen pipeline project is revived, Algeria will be able through it to cover about 25% of Europe’s future imports of hydrogen by 2030, meaning that it establishes Algeria’s position as a major sustainable supplier of energy of all kinds (gas, hydrogen and electricity). ) to Europe”.
