Expectations of an increase in electricity consumption in Algeria – Al-Hiwar Al-Jazairia

New forecasts from the International Energy Agency indicate an acceleration of electricity consumption growth in Africa over the next 3 years, especially in Algeria and South Africa.

According to the data published by the specialized “energy” platform, the potential for electricity consumption in Africa to grow by an average of 4.1% annually between 2023 and 2025, to reach 856 TWh. And the International Energy Agency expected the growth of electricity consumption in Africa by more than 3% during the current year (2023), and the demand for electricity in Africa is expected to grow by an average of 4.5% during the years 2024 and 2025. The source indicates that natural gas will remain the largest source of electricity in Africa until 2025, as electricity generated from this fuel is expected to increase by about 30 terawatts over the next 3 years, to approach the total of 400 terawatts per hour.

With regard to electricity consumption in Algeria, the International Energy Agency’s expectations indicate that electricity consumption in Algeria will grow at an average of 5% annually between 2022 and 2025, which is the same rate recorded in 2021, after the decline in domestic demand to 3% in 2020. The report was based on government data that confirms An increase in the installed production capacity in Algeria by 3.2 gigawatts during the period from September 2021 to August 2022, a growth rate of 13%. It is the month in which the peak consumption was recorded due to the heat wave that swept the country.

Algeria seeks to expand its electricity exports to neighboring countries in North Africa and southern Europe, depending on plans to generate electricity from renewable energy over the next ten years, as it aims to develop 15 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2035, and Algeria is expected to produce the first 50 megawatts from the project.
