Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang said on Tuesday that China has not provided any weapons to either side of the conflict in Ukraine.
Chen said China is neither the originator of the crisis nor a directly involved party. “What has China done to deserve to be blamed or even punished and threatened? This is totally unacceptable,” Chen said at a press conference on the sidelines of the ongoing annual legislative session.
Describing the Ukraine crisis as an avoidable tragedy, Chen said it is, in essence, an explosion of the problems that have accumulated in Europe’s security governance.
He said China has always made its own independent judgment based on the characteristics of the case.
He added that China chooses peace over war, dialogue over sanctions, and de-escalation over fanning fires.
Noting that peace talks efforts have been repeatedly undermined, Chen said there appears to be a “hidden hand” pushing to prolong and escalate the conflict and use the Ukraine crisis to serve a geopolitical agenda.
Chen stressed that conflict, sanctions and pressure are all factors that will not solve the problem, and said that what is required is calm, reason and dialogue.
He said the peace talks process should start as soon as possible.
