A human rights organization in France called for the repeal of the law that allows police to shoot drivers who do not comply with orders, and it has caused the death of 16 people since 2022.
The demand of the French League for Human Rights came after the killing of the 17-year-old Nael Marzouki, of Algerian origin, by a French policeman who shot him after he refused to comply with police orders in the Paris suburb of Nanterre last Tuesday, an incident that ignited France and triggered a wave of violent protests.
The association says that the law that allows the police to shoot those who refuse to comply with it was approved in 2017 and caused the deaths of 13 people in 2022 and 3 people in 2023, most of whom are of African and Arab origin. French research indicates an increase in police shootings of drivers by an amount 5 times after the law was passed.
