Representing the Minister of Culture and Arts Suriya Moulouji, today, Sunday, at the Palace of Culture, “Mofdi Zakaria”, “Zuhair Bello”, Secretary General of the Ministry, supervised the inauguration of the fifth training session for the benefit of the various security forces in the field of protecting cultural heritage, under the slogan “Protecting cultural heritage and combating illegal trafficking with cultural property”, in the presence of representatives of the Naval Forces Command, the National Gendarmerie Command, the National Security, the Algerian Customs, as well as the executives of the Ministry of Culture and Arts.
In her speech delivered on her behalf by the Secretary-General, the Minister of Culture and Arts praised the role of the various security forces in assuming the role of protecting cultural heritage, considering that this training session complements theoretical knowledge and field experiences in the field of cultural security and homeland protection, stressing that this fifth training course came amid challenges The ministerial sector, starting with the digitization of our cultural heritage and the review of the archaeological map, since the opening of the regional sessions on the 26th of last April, which will include all the states of the country, to be concluded on the 18th of May in a national symposium that will be the conclusion of the Heritage Month for the year 2023.
The Minister of Culture and Arts renewed Algeria’s commitment to protecting the tangible and intangible national cultural heritage and its endeavor to preserve it. Since independence, it has worked to enact a legal arsenal aimed at protecting cultural heritage. She explained that this legal system was accompanied by the development of governmental institutional mechanisms, which came to embody these national legislations on On the ground, research centers were established in the field of research in the tangible and intangible cultural heritage, and bureaus were established to manage cultural hangars in our great south, and national museums supported new organizational structures that allow them to carry out their activities aimed at cultivating awareness of protecting the cultural heritage of the nation, and a bureau was also established to manage and exploit protected cultural properties to manage Classified archaeological sites.
The minister also commended the wise decision of the Prime Minister to sponsor the increase of the state’s contribution to the Bureau during the years 2023 and 2024, in order to enable the Bureau to enhance the protection of archaeological sites at the national level, by employing 668 guard assistants, in addition to the completion of 32 guard posts with the acquisition of modern equipment to protect and secure archaeological sites.
She added, “The keenness of our ministerial sector to hold training courses in the field of protecting and preserving cultural heritage falls within the strategy of the Algerian state, which aims to enhance the comprehensive protection of our cultural heritage at all local, regional and even international levels, and also raises the ceiling of the challenge to confront all crimes related to it. We work with all our partners, inside and outside the country, to confront them as cross-border crimes, as the phenomenon of trafficking in cultural property is considered the third criminal activity in the world after the arms and drug trade.
