Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Algeria elected for the Africa region to assume the position of Vice President – Al-Hiwar Al-Jazaeryia

Algeria was elected on behalf of the Africa region, in the person of Ambassador Salima Abdelhak, Permanent Representative of Algeria to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, to assume the position of Vice-President during the Fifth Review Conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention held from 15 to 19 May in The Hague, Netherlands.

Algeria’s election is a tribute to its tireless efforts in the field of comprehensive disarmament and its prominent role in maintaining international peace and security.

It should be noted that Algeria had assumed the duties of deputy head of the open-ended working group, to prepare for the Fifth Review Conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which is held every five years, with the aim of evaluating the results and achievements of the Convention and developing a strategic vision for the next five years, in light of emerging threats and challenges on the international scene. .

Algeria also actively participated in a retreat of ambassadors accredited to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, where the permanent representative of Algeria took over the task of revitalizing the session on international cooperation and support emanating from the treaty on chemical weapons and related programs of the organization.

Algeria is participating with an important delegation in the work of the Fifth Review Conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which has been held since Monday in The Hague.

On the sidelines of this conference, the Executive Secretariat of the National Committee in charge of implementing the Convention on the Prevention of Chemical Weapons organized a parallel activity yesterday, Monday, in The Hague, in coordination with the Technical Secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, under the title “Strengthening Capabilities in the Framework of South-South Cooperation”, which was attended by permanent representatives of several Countries with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, officials of the organization, diplomats and experts of different nationalities.

During this meeting, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Algeria to the organization, Salima Abdelhak, highlighted in her opening speech the active role played by Algeria and its valuable contribution to the organization’s activities in the field of capacity building, especially at the African level.

Twinning between the National Institute of Forensic Evidence of the National Gendarmerie and a German institute

On the other hand, the Executive Secretary of the National Committee in charge of implementing the treaty on the prevention of chemical weapons and the rest of the stakeholders reviewed the theoretical and practical capabilities that Algeria has in the areas of cooperation within the framework of the treaty, and they also discussed the recent preparations for the “Kimax Africa” symposium to be held in Algiers from September 23. To the next October 4, which will focus on strengthening the capacities of African countries related to the multi-component response to chemical emergencies.

This and “Kimax Africa” falls within the framework of implementing Article 10 of the Chemical Weapons Convention, as the Technical Secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is developing the capabilities of member states in the field of assistance and protection from incidents and attacks related to chemical warfare in which toxic industrial chemicals are used.

Within the framework of the participation of the Algerian delegation in The Hague, the Executive Secretary of the National Committee in charge of implementing the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons signed, today, Tuesday, at the headquarters of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, two memorandums of understanding related to twinning between the National Institute of Forensic Evidence and Criminology of the National Gendarmerie and the German Institute for Research in Protective Technologies and Protection against nuclear, radiological, biological and chemical weapons.

The first memorandum concerns providing support within the framework of the laboratory twinning program of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which was signed with the Technical Secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, while the second memorandum was signed with the German Institute for Research in Protection Technologies and Protection Against Nuclear, Radiological, and Biological Weapons. chemical.

This project, which takes 41 months, aims to enhance the capabilities of the Algerian institute in areas related to the implementation of the objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention for the peaceful uses of chemistry and to improve the performance of the same institute in order to obtain the classification of the organization’s accredited laboratory or to prove its superiority in chemical analysis in areas related to the Convention, according to Algerian news agency.
