The poet Abdelali Mezghish called on the Algerian Writers Union to engage in the process of change that falls within the vision of the country’s supreme authorities about the new Algeria.
The poet Abdel-Aali Mezghish demanded, upon his arrival this morning as a guest at the forum of the newspaper “The Other Voice” in Algiers, that the Algerian Writers Union be a partner of the political and cultural system in our country, and commented on the matter by saying: “There is a will for change at the level of higher bodies, including the Ministry Culture, now civil society, which is represented by the Algerian Writers Union as the oldest cultural association in our country, must engage in this new direction, and we demand that the union be a partner of the political and cultural system in our country.
The guest of the “The Other Voice” forum expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation that the union has reached, and considered that its continuation in the practice of simple collective action, such as organizing poetry evenings and honorary and cultural seminars attended by a small number, as he put it, harms the image of Algeria in the cultural aspect.
Mezghish stated that the Writers’ Union is required to form a committee or crisis cell consisting of intellectuals, intellectuals, and experts in conducting cultural policies to reach solutions.
On the election of Youssef Shakra to a new term at the head of the Algerian Writers Union, he commented, “We will resort to appeal, and we will submit a report to the Arab Writers Union… Those who cling to the Union of Writers must understand that it is greater than them.”
In the same context, Mazghish asked: “Did the union have positions on major issues and new constitutions? Were they summoned for consultations? Did they have a presence at the Arab Summit? What are they doing?”
Mezghish stopped talking about the initiative to “rehabilitate the Algerian Writers’ Union” and the “inclusive conference”, addressing those involved in the union: “The goal of change is not to restore practices that existed before, we aim to defend Algeria and its image.”
Adding: “The General Conference knew the absence of bodies and senior writers.. Today, the number of those involved in the initiative is increasing, and hundreds are calling us to join the initiative that Dr. Larbi Zubairi and Abdullah Hammadi joined, both of whom were former presidents of the Union, Professor Youssef Waglisi, poet Suleiman Jawadi, Bouzid Herz God, Ibrahim Siddiqui, many true intellectuals who have graced the country.”
And he continued: “We wrote to those around Shaqra and told them to nominate and elect one of the members belonging to the university, for example, to head the federation, and they said we are with you, but the opposite happened and they elected Shaqra and turned their backs on us, and this is the last chance we give them.”
Muzghish talked about the procedures that they will follow: “The first thing we will file an appeal at the level of the Ministry of Interior, which includes all our precautions against the conference and all the practices of the union, and we will organize a press conference at the earliest opportunity, and why Shakra sticks to his words and that we are not involved in the union and thus dwarfs it and limits it to a membership card .. We are not against this or getting involved, but where are we going to push the files, the headquarters is closed.
