The President and Director General of the National Red Meat Corporation, Lamine Draghi, revealed this Tuesday that the company will pump 30,000 tons of fresh and live meat into the national market in stages during the month of Ramadan, at a competitive price not exceeding 1,200 DZD per kg.
During his hosting on Channel 1, Draghi said that health agreements have been signed with a number of meat-exporting countries, such as Brazil, Sudan, India, Colombia and Poland, with the aim of ensuring the safety of these imported meats and slaughtering them according to the Islamic method, with the participation of Algerian veterinarians, in a precedent that is the first of its kind in the history of Algeria.
Draghi explained that the preparation process for importing this meat began in mid-January and includes 20,000 tons of fresh meat and 10,000 heads of calves for slaughter, noting that the first ship of Brazilian calves arrived in Algeria two days ago and was directed to the slaughterhouses affiliated to the company. Algerian red meat or those belonging to the private sector in the center, east and west of the country to facilitate the marketing process as soon as possible.
The first guest considered that the average consumption of meat in the month of Ramadan exceeds 55 thousand tons, and that the imported quantities exceed fifty percent of the needs, which would work to reduce prices and limit speculation in them, adding by saying, “The company will sell this meat at a price of 1200 DZD per kilogram.”
Regarding fresh meat, he said that it will be imported as a first stage from Sudan and India, and that the first ships coming from the two countries will arrive before the month of Ramadan, and he indicated that this meat is healthy and fit for consumption for a period of 03 months.
Regarding the distribution process, Draghi revealed that contracts were signed with 12 national companies distributing meat across the national territory and covering about 48 states, including the interior and some southern states, where sales are carried out through 1,100 points of sale.
Within this context, the same spokesman announced the agreements that will be signed between the distributing companies and a number of butchers to market these fresh meats belonging to the Algerian Meat Company, provided that no other products are sold.
And with regard to the control process, Darraji explained that the nominal list of butchers who were chosen to carry out marketing operations through points of sale will be directed to the Ministry of Commerce, and the governors, each in their mandate, will supervise the follow-up of the extent of the commitment of these merchants to the agreement concluded with the distribution companies to ensure the health of the citizen and adherence to the specified price.
