Senior officials from about 20 major intelligence agencies in the world held a secret meeting on the sidelines of the “Shangri-La Dialogue” security forum in Singapore this weekend, Reuters reported, citing five sources.
The sources stated that such meetings were organized by the Singapore government, and were held secretly in a separate place on the sidelines of the security forum, and these meetings were not disclosed before.
According to the sources, the United States was represented at the meeting by Director of the National Intelligence Service, Avril Heinz, while China was also among the countries present, despite the tensions between Washington and Beijing.
An Indian source confirmed that Samant Goel, the head of the Research and Analysis Department of the Indian External Intelligence Service, also participated in the meeting.
One person familiar with the discussions described the meeting as “an important component of the international shadow agenda,” and added: “Given the scope of the international presence (for this meeting), it is not a festival of traditional crafts, but a way to promote a deeper understanding of the intentions and the truth of things.”
A spokesperson for the Singaporean Ministry of Defense stated that while attending the Shangri-La Dialogue, “participants, including senior officials from intelligence agencies, take the opportunity to meet with their counterparts.”
