Sector Minister Hisham Sufyan Salwachi said. The interests of his ministry aspire to raise marine fishing production to 142,000 tons by 2024

In a speech he delivered during the works of the government-governors’ meeting, which was opened by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, at the Nations Palace, under the slogan “Local Development: Evaluation and Prospects”, Mr. Slawachi explained that the embodiment of this goal will take place through several steps, the foremost of which is continuity. In strengthening and rehabilitating the marine fishing fleet, especially building large-sized vessels, and encouraging fishing on the high seas and in the waters under the jurisdiction of other countries such as Mauritania, Libya and Guinea-Bissau within the framework of agreements.

In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to modernize and modernize the management of sea fishing ports to raise fishing production and improve the conditions for practicing sea fishing activities, to prepare anchoring sites for traditional fishing vessels, in addition to establishing a farm for fattening red tuna in the framework of partnership with foreign dealers, which contributes to raising the value. added to the sector, adds the minister.

Regarding fishing on the high seas, he said, “Algeria was able, thanks to the wise directives of the President of the Republic, to raise its share of live red tuna at the international level, from 1655 tons to 2023 tons, an increase of 368 tons, equivalent to a growth rate of 22.23 percent. , Through the participation of the Algerian technical delegation in the works of the meeting of the International Organization for the Protection of Red Tuna in its extraordinary session No. 23 in Portugal from November 14 to 21, 2022, as it is considered the largest share that Algeria has obtained since joining this organization in 2003.

As for aquaculture, the sector aims, according to Salwachi, to raise production to 24,000 tons by 2024.

To achieve this goal, the sector is working on preparing areas for aquaculture activities and granting real estate containers to investors, establishing units for the production of small marine and continental fish through granting real estate containers, generalizing farms with intensive production in states with qualifications for the promotion of aquaculture, establishing aquaculture poles Maritime and continental, as well as financial support for investments and improvement of loans for exploitation as well as diversification of funding sources, as well as strengthening the network of distribution and marketing of the products of this division, according to the minister.

In this context, Salwachi pointed out that his sector seeks to generalize projects for the production of royal cajouj and sea wolf fish in floating cages in the sea, to reach 14 coastal states by 2024, compared to 9 states currently.

As for tilapia (tilapia), the specific goal is to embody new projects to reach a production of 5,000 tons by 2024.

With regard to the processing industries for fishing products, Mr. Slawachi confirmed that work is underway to accompany the completion of 5 new units in the year 2024, noting that Algeria possesses 16 units with a total production capacity of more than 20 thousand tons annually.
