The distinguished theater artist and former director of the Algerian National Theater, Said Ben Salama, passed away this morning.
Said Ben Salama was born on November 22, 1946 in the village of “Ath Zamenzer”, south of the city of “Tizi Ouzou”.
He was among the first students to enroll in the Higher National Institute of Dramatic Arts in 1965, and graduated in 1970.
While studying, he participated in small roles such as the historical epic “Ivanhoe” by the French “Henri Cordeau” (1966), the historical epic “The Beast” (1967), and “The Encircled Corpse” by Kateb Yassin (1968).
Zayani Sharif Ayad assisted in directing Eugene O’Neill’s play “Emperor Jones” (1969), and co-directed and co-produced Alfred Farag’s play “Ali Jinnah al-Tabrizi” (1970).
After graduating, he joined the National Theatre, and participated as an actor in the plays: “Oh, Brother Rak Mustalkal” by “Abdullah Oriashi” (1973), “Bab al-Futuh” by “Salim Riad” and “Bani Kalboun” by “Wlad Abd al-Rahman Kaki” (1973). 1973), and assisted the company of “Zayani Sharif Ayyad” in directing the play “The Cemetery” (1974) and acted in “Sikt Al-Salamah” (1975).
He continued his career by working in the management and administration departments of the National Theater starting in 1976, before he was appointed director of the National Theater starting in 1985, and was a founding member of the National Professional Theater Festival in the years 1985, 1986 and 1987, before turning in 1988 to directing.
He was the head of the jury of the Ninth National Festival of Professional Theater in 2014, before supervising the Technical Directorate of the National Theater in 2015 and 2016..
