Maysoon bin Sheikh Al-Hussein, Deputy Director of Vegetable Cultivation and Industrial Agriculture at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, announced today, Thursday, the establishment of a national gene bank during the second semester of this year.
During her appearance as a guest on the radio program “Guest of the Morning”, the spokeswoman stressed the interest in the greater development of manufacturing industries in Algeria, and said that the National Gene Bank will be concerned with preserving biological diversity, and its scope of activity will be broader and will go beyond seeds to genetic fingerprints by preserving the original characteristics of all varieties. Noting that the establishment of the National Seed Bank contributed to the advancement of the seed and seedling sector and the achievement of self-sufficiency in cereal seeds of all kinds, by accommodating the seed bank for 6,000 accessions. And in the context, Bin Sheikh Al-Hussein revealed that seed banks will be established across other states by 5 to 6 banks in the internal states, and they will include seeds of cereals, dry legumes, vegetables, corn, etc., as Algeria currently produces potato seeds locally by 4 to 5 varieties, and the bet is to expand production field to other seeds.
The Deputy Director of Vegetable Cultivation and Industrial Agriculture at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development stressed the inevitability of developing vegetable seeds, scientific institutes and research units, and said that the goal now is manufacturing industries, and the sunflower program has been launched across 40,000 hectares in the northern and southern states, with the possibility of activating a similar program in 2024 While a unit for converting these seeds was launched recently, and many incentives were approved to deepen investment in this field.
