Today, the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation endorsed the legitimate decision of Azerbaijan and the step it took to establish border checkpoints within the territories under its sovereignty in response to threats and in accordance with the principles and rules of international law.
The General Secretariat refers to the tripartite statement signed by Azerbaijan, Armenia and the Russian Federation on November 10, 2020, in which, among other things, the end of all military activities was announced. In light of this tripartite statement, the General Secretariat calls on Armenia to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
According to the tripartite statement, Azerbaijan must ensure security and allow free movement of citizens, vehicles and freight through the Lachin-Khankendi road. The General Secretariat recognizes that ensuring border security is one of the responsibilities of the Government of Azerbaijan and a necessary condition for achieving national security, state sovereignty and enforcing laws.
The General Secretariat also reaffirms the call made by the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation at its forty-ninth session, which was held in Nouakchott, Islamic Republic of Mauritania, and previous sessions, to normalize relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia on the basis of mutual recognition and respect for internationally recognized borders and without prejudice to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each party. to the other.
