This is what the membership of the UN Security Council grants to Algeria – the Algerian dialogue

Algeria is preparing to receive its membership in the UN Security Council in early January for the 2024-2025 term, and it won non-permanent membership in the June 6 elections, with an overwhelming majority of 184 votes out of a total of 193 votes representing the member states of the United Nations Organization.

The non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council, which Algeria seized, makes it a “pen holder,” meaning that it enjoys what a permanent member of the Security Council enjoys, with the exception of the right of veto. According to the explanations of political analyst Hakim Bougrara, “pen holders” can submit draft resolutions and regulations to be presented to the United Nations General Assembly, and they may become effective if the permanent members do not object to them through the “right of veto.”

Professor Hakim Bougarara told Al-Hiwar that the membership of the UN Security Council is not an easy matter, as there are 50 countries that did not obtain membership in the Council because they lack the most important criteria that Algeria enjoys, which is the service of peace and security, and the presence in the UN Security Council gives countries a global reputation and makes them close to centers international decision making.

Algeria’s status and reputation diplomatically is not subject to questioning, even by countries that may have diplomatic differences with Algeria, similar to Spain, which voted to support Algeria in the Security Council in the elections for non-permanent membership. UN Security Council.

Algeria, which also enjoys diplomatic recognition in the Arab world and Africa, in view of its steadfast positions, especially with regard to supporting peace and security, will enable it in the near future to plead in favor of just causes from the platform of the UN Security Council and in its capacity as a non-permanent member, which was confirmed by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, today, Wednesday, in his message. To the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres. Algeria has become empowered to submit draft resolutions and regulations for this purpose, as membership in the Security Council has become a tool for Algeria and has never been just a goal, according to Boughara, who said that it is a new opportunity for Algeria to work on achieving new achievements and an opportunity to mobilize world public opinion through civil society. Who will put pressure on the governments of her country for more just decisions that Algeria will defend and promote in the international press.

The possibility of presiding over the Security Council, demanding a meeting of the members of the UN Security Council, and interfering in many major issues at the international level, especially issues related to international peace and security, all become the right of Algeria immediately upon receiving its non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council, as it will occupy the seat in the period between January 1 January 2024 until December 31, 2025 representing Africa alongside Sierra Leone, and the representative of Algeria in the Security Council may be the head of the permanent mission to the United Nations, and it is not forbidden for Algeria to send another person to represent it in the meetings of the Council.
