UNICEF warns…! Algerian Dialogue

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warnedof the rising number of children suffering from drought conditions in Ethiopia and Kenya and Somalia more than doubled in five months.

And the organization stated, in a statement, that about 20.2 million children in the three countries now face the risk of severe hunger, thirst and disease, compared to about 10 million children last July, noting that climate change, conflicts, global inflation and grain shortages afflict the region.

And “UNICEF” pointed out that children face, in light of the families’ exposure to increasing pressures, a group of risks, including their employment or marriage at an early age, as Leek van de Wiel, Deputy Regional Director of the United Nations in East and Southern Africa, said in a statement, “ We urgently need a global effort to mobilize resources to reduce the devastating and irreparable harm to children in the Horn of Africa.”

UNICEF estimates that about two million children across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are currently in need of urgent treatment for acute malnutrition, which is the most severe type of hunger.

It also mentioned that about 2.7 million children stopped going to school due to drought, and there are about 4 million other children who face the same fate over time.
