Algeria and Portugal… a friendship with a historical dimension – Al-Hiwar Al-Jazaeryia

The friendship between Algeria and Portugal is characterized by its historical dimension and its foundation on mutual respect, good neighborliness, and continuous consultation. These relations are bound to be further strengthened on the occasion of the state visit in which the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, embarks on this country, starting from Monday for a period of two days.

This visit falls within the framework of strengthening the historical friendship, cooperation and good neighborly relations between the two countries and pushing them towards new horizons and broader areas for the benefit of the two neighboring peoples.

Strong diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1975, and the level of cooperation rose to the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Good Neighborliness on January 8, 2005. The leaderships of the two countries seek to consolidate the gains of this strategic relationship and open the way for distinguished relations between the two countries.

Algeria is an essential and reliable partner, which played an important role in supporting the democratic opposition against the dictatorship in Portugal in the past, as stated by the Portuguese Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva, during his visit to Algeria last year.

After being received by President Tebboune, he mentioned that in 1975, an agreement was signed in Algeria that allowed the independence of many African countries that were colonized by Portugal, which constituted – as he added – “the birth of countries that speak the Portuguese language.”

The two countries are of great importance in the Mediterranean basin, where mutual trust characterizes cooperation between them, especially in the field of combating terrorism and illegal immigration, in the field of security and stability in the region, and establishing good neighborly relations between countries and peoples.

The two countries’ viewpoints converge on various international and regional issues of common concern, and they also share the same diplomatic principles based on the principle of mutual respect, equality and respect for the will of peoples, especially since Portugal has included in its constitution the principle of peoples’ right to self-determination.

The two countries contribute to the development of political and security coordination and consultation within the framework of regional cooperation organizations and share common forums, including the 5 + 5 group.

The leaderships of the two countries seek to consolidate good relations in the political and diplomatic fields and raise the level of economic cooperation to broader horizons.

Parliamentary diplomatic cooperation was strengthened in March 2022 with the establishment of the Algerian-Portuguese Parliamentary Friendship Group, which would strengthen the friendly relations between the two peoples and raise the level of coordination and consultation.

Giving a new breath to economic cooperation according to the principle of mutual benefit

In the economic field, Algeria seeks to strengthen its position as the most important partner of Portugal in the energy sector and aspires to expand cooperation to other fields, such as renewable energies, industry, public works, emerging enterprises, agriculture and tourism, by giving a new breath to the existing cooperation between the two countries according to the principle of mutual benefit. .

It also seeks to enhance the presence of Portuguese investments in the Algerian market through profitable partnerships.

For this purpose, the sixth session of the joint working group for Algerian-Portuguese economic cooperation was held in Algiers in the middle of this month, headed by the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun, and the Portuguese Minister of Economy and Sea, Antonio Costa Silva.

This session culminated in the signing of a record containing an evaluation of bilateral cooperation and the axes that ensure its promotion in order to develop the foundations of economic and trade cooperation.

The session witnessed the participation of representatives from the media and communication technologies, public works, finance, industry and pharmaceutical production, irrigation, agriculture, trade, energy, transportation, housing and emerging institutions.

For Portugal, Algeria is an essential and reliable partner in a world whose features are not clear at the economic and geopolitical level, according to the Portuguese Minister of Economy, who affirmed, in a previous statement after the conclusion of the works of the sixth session of the Cooperation Group, his country’s will to promote investments in Algeria so that it “double five times over the five years.” Coming.”

In this regard, the Portuguese capital will host the Algerian-Portuguese business forum, with the aim of bringing investors from the two countries closer, discussing available cooperation and partnership opportunities, and giving an impetus to economic cooperation between the two countries.

In preparation for this forum, it was agreed to activate the memorandum of understanding signed in 2014 between the National Agency for Investment Development and the Portuguese Agency for Trade and Investment and to re-establish the joint technical committee between them.

The meeting, which will bring together businessmen in the two countries, will be an opportunity to familiarize Portuguese dealers with the privileges offered in the new Algerian investment law, and to exchange information between institutions that are active in various sectors.
