The Secretary-General of Amnesty International, Agnès Callamard, confirmed, according to what was stated in the same statement, that “after six months, the Spanish and Moroccan authorities continue to deny any responsibility for the Melilla massacre, while evidence of multiple gross violations of human rights is mounting,” considering that “this situation It smacks of cover-up and racism.”

Nearly 2,000 sub-Saharan African migrants tried to enter Melilla from Nador (northern Morocco) on June 24th. The tragedy of these people on what is known as “Black Friday” sparked international outrage, as the United Nations condemned the “excessive use of force by the Moroccan and Spanish authorities.”

Along with Amnesty International, independent experts appointed by the UN Human Rights Council have confirmed the death toll to be at least 37, and deplored the lack of specific responsibilities in both Morocco and Spain.

UN experts confirmed that the tragic images of African migrants who were killed at the Spanish-Moroccan border when trying to cross into the Melilla enclave last June revealed the deep racial biases that characterize many contemporary border control policies and practices.
