Nearly 40,000 fishermen benefited from compensation during biological rest and weather disturbances

Today, Monday, the Minister of Fisheries and Fishing Products, Ahmed Badani, revealed that about 40,000 fishermen at the national level have benefited from compensation during the period of biological rest and weather disturbances.
Overseeing the inauguration of the national workshop for providing technical support for the establishment and management of fishing and aquaculture cooperatives in Oran, Badani highlighted in his speech that “Algeria is the only Mediterranean country out of a total of 23 countries that compensates fishermen during the biological rest period (4 months for trawlers). And 3 months for small vessels) and air disturbances, thanks to the decision of the President of the Republic, pointing out that about 40,000 fishermen at the national level have benefited from this procedure.
The minister stressed that this workshop constitutes a very important step, as through it the technical cooperation program concluded with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will be launched, which aims to “put into practice a national program for capacity-building and the establishment, organization and management of marine fishing and aquaculture cooperatives by discussing successful experiences.” In Algeria or with other countries in the region to benefit from it, with the participation of experts in organizing the profession through cooperatives, professionals, economic partners and other ministerial departments.
The participation of experts in this workshop aims, Badani adds, to “provide an overview of the advantages and benefits of organizing in the form of cooperatives and to listen to the suggestions and aspirations of professionals and sector partners based on the participatory approach in order to adapt the contents of technical support activities for the establishment and management of fishing cooperatives with the needs and aspirations of the beneficiaries of this the program”.
And in the fishing port of Oran, the Minister of Fisheries and Fishing Products visited an exhibition in which specialized economic operators participated in the field of marine fishing, aquaculture and processing industries, and listened to the concerns and suggestions of professionals, as well as inspecting the fishermen’s club and the health complex designated for this category.
In the municipality of Mers-el-Kebir, the first official of the sector inspected the Ship Building and Repair Corporation of the Ministry of National Defense and a private factory for the conversion and canning of fishing products, with the inauguration of a new production line for the conversion and canning of sardines in the municipality of Hassi Ben Okba, and another factory for the conversion and canning of fishing products in the municipality of Hassi Bonif.

Launching a package of digital platforms for the benefit of investors and professionals in the sector

The Minister of Fisheries and Fishing Products in Oran oversaw the launch of a package of digital platforms for the benefit of investors and professionals in the sector.
The matter is related to the digital platform of the Algerian Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the platform for marine fishing and aquaculture professionals to raise the concerns of professionals and others for fishing cooperatives, and the website of the Ninth International Salon of Fishing and Aquaculture “SIBA 2024”, which is scheduled to take place from the eighth to the eleventh of next February at the Convention Center. “Ahmed bin Ahmed” of Oran.
In his speech on the occasion, Badani stressed that “the marine fishing sector and fishing products are of great importance in developing the national economy and enhancing the country’s food security, with its abundant capabilities across the various coastal and interior states, and even the southern regions.”
The minister stated that “the marine fishing and fishing products sector adopts a work strategy that falls within the government’s action plan emanating from the commitments of the President of the Republic, aiming to raise productive capacities and contribute to achieving food security for the country, especially through the development of aquaculture on a large scale and the development of fishing on the high seas.” Building, repairing and maintaining fishing and aquaculture vessels with national capabilities and encouraging investment in manufacturing industries to value marine products.
In the same context, he called for “creating the appropriate environment to implement these goals by keeping pace with the endeavor pursued by the state in adopting digitization and using information and communication technologies to facilitate administrative procedures and access to information.”
Badani stated that one of the most important axes of the sector’s strategy is to improve the economic and social conditions for marine fishing and aquaculture professionals, noting in the same context the keenness of the President of the Republic, Mr. Periods of biological rest and bad weather, and the measures taken recently to deal with the damage that affected seafarers at the level of the ports of Khemisti, Baharoun and Fouka in Tipaza.
A cooperative system for marine fishing and aquaculture, the first of its kind since independence, was established, which aims to improve their economic and social status and enable them to jointly and rationally exploit resources, equipment and means.
On the sidelines of the Oran meeting, which was attended by professionals of the sector and economic operators in the field of marine fishing and aquaculture, as well as the representative of the United Nations for Food and Agriculture (FAO) in Algeria, Irina Beto, a partnership agreement was signed between the Algerian Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the International Conference Center “Mohamed Ben Ahmed” to organize The activities of the ninth edition of the International Salon of Fishing and Aquaculture from the eighth to the eleventh of February 2024 in Oran.
