Zobar: It is possible to resort to the use of supplementary irrigation, and the water situation is not alarming for the cultivation of grain – Al-Houwar Al-Jazaeryia

The Director of Agricultural Production Control and Development at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ali Zoubar, revealed today, Tuesday, that it is possible to resort to the use of supplementary irrigation for grain cultivation in order to face water scarcity and preserve this agriculture, stressing that the water situation does not warn of danger for grain.

“Supplementary irrigation is an opportunity to save the grain season and enable the grain to grow,” the same official explained on the waves of the Algerian Radio 3 channel, noting that “the situation is not alarming for grain.”

He added, “In the last agricultural season, there was a lack of rain in December and January, and the rains in March and April allowed the growth of grain and ensured a good harvest of more than 40 million quintals.”

Zobar explained that the National Institute of Land, Irrigation and Drainage (INSID) is “monitoring the situation closely and issuing district-specific weather warnings” and “every time there is a need, supplemental irrigation is turned on.”

He also indicated that, according to weather forecasts, “rain is expected to start on January 15.”

On the other hand, and while touching on the preparations for the month of Ramadan 2023, the official confirmed the availability of sufficient stocks of various agricultural products, indicating that the state has consistently formed its security stock of food products.

The same official said that the stock consists mainly of cereals and milk powder, which “is available and is supposed to guarantee the required conditions for a month without tension on these two products.”

There is also a strategic stock of potatoes, amounting to 40,000 tons, in addition to agricultural products for greenhouses that are “available in large quantities,” pointing to the importance of the direct selling mechanism to combat speculation and enable consumers to supply them at reasonable prices.

In this aspect, he explained that the Ministerial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is working with the Ministry of Trade and Export Promotion to establish direct sales points for various products with wide consumption across the regions of the country in anticipation of the month of Ramadan.
